Explore 17th century Amsterdam painters & artworks (2024)

How to create map visualizations to discover new insights about 17th century painters and art dealers in Amsterdams? This was one of the questions I looked at in my theoretical and practical exploration for the Digital Humanities Benelux 2024 conference.

Practically, I designed & developed an interactive map visualization. As a basis I used research by Weixuan Li, who did deep mapping of artists’ locations in 17th century Amsterdam for her PhD research. Using the map tool, you can explore locations painters worked from, compare their painting styles and connect to Linked Open Data sources, such as artist biographies. An important aspect of the tool is the visualization of uncertainty (e.g., we do not always know exactly where a painter worked from).

I worked on a first demonstrator during the Virtual Interiors Project (2019-21); I created a new version in Spring 2024.
