A few months ago, I heard about the Celluloid Remix contest. The idea of it is to remix old video material (of the Dutch Filmmuseum). Having worked with old video material before (see YouTube), I also decided to enter the contest and make a remix, and attend the workshops connected to the contest.
My goal with the remix Het Zwarte Duister (‘The Black Darkness’) was to show the atmosphere and difficult working circumstances in the Dutch mines, in the beginning of the 20th century. Circumstances which still exist to this day in some coal mines, like in China. I used an old movie about the Dutch coal mines, and remixed it. I also mixed in my own animations (made with Adobe After Effects) to enhance the atmosphere.
